meta tags and key words.

What are Meta Tags, Key Words and Descriptions, and how do they help me?

Meta tags are codes that are inserted into the "head" area of your web pages. Other than the title tag, information in the head area of your web pages is not seen by those viewing your pages in browsers. These tags give web browsers and search engine spiders or crawlers directions on various information. Today, the most valuable feature they offer is the ability to control to some degree how your web pages are described by some search engines. They may also improve your web site's ranking in some Search Engines.

Optimizing your site meta tags is only a tiny fraction of the job! Did you know that search engines actually need to find target keywords within the visible body text on your site pages in order to find it a relevant match for related search queries? For search engines to rank your site highly for particular Keywords or Key Phrases that you would expect potential visitors to type in, each individual page of your site MUST be written with those words and phrases in mind.

How to Write the Description of your Site

The description of your page is usually what the search engines will show the searcher. It basically should summarize your site and business and include as many of your keywords as possible. Your Page Title is basically the same thing, but a much shorter version. Be specific with your Page Titles, they sometimes serve as keywords, depending on the search engine.

How to choose your Keywords and Keyword Phrases

The words that you put on your website are eventually going to be indexed by the search engines. The textual content on your web pages is how search engines will classify your website and how people will find your website when using a search engine.

The most basic idea behind selecting the right keywords and key pharases is choosing keywords for which people are actually searching. Let's say I have a Web site for a ski resort.  Now, I would not target the keywords "ski" or "snowboard." These terms are far too generalized and will have a ton of competing sites. The purpose of keywords is to target words that will bring people to your site as opposed to other people's. Therefore I would use more specific keywords that look more like these: "ski resorts," "discount ski vacations" or even select localized terms like "Colorado ski resorts."
